Maeve
Maeve Sweeney returns to the site of her memories, she returns to Belfast, to a Republican enclave close to the town centre where her father Martin, mother Eileen and younger sister Roisin have remained. On the night of her arrival home, the whole neighbourhood is on the street; driven out by a "suspect device". Among these people Maeve feels a great humanity, a feeling made tangible in the way they speak, in their social traditions and in the way they survive constant violence.
Maeveās presence in this place stimulates in her a series of recollections that are both an attempt to integrate herself with a personal history and to rationalise her separation from the past she does not feel part of. In those closes to her Maeve provokes a desire to describe the feelings of distress they experience, but also the sense of value in their struggle.
